Nigeria has reiterated its “firm and unequivocal support” for the sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity of the Federal Republic of Somalia, warning against actions that undermine its constitutional order following Israel’s formal recognition of Somaliland.
In a statement issued Saturday by Foreign Affairs Ministry spokesperson Kimiebi Ebienfa, the Federal Government condemned rhetoric or moves threatening Somalia’s statehood, while praising Mogadishu’s peace and reconciliation efforts. “Nigeria stands in solidarity with Somalia… stability is integral to the peace and security of the Horn of Africa and the continent,” the statement read, urging international actors to respect sovereignty and support Somali institutions.
The ministry cautioned foreign entities against recognising any part of Somalia as independent, warning such steps “would only escalate the crisis.”
Israel became the first country Friday to recognise Somaliland—an autonomous northwestern region that declared independence in 1991—prompting condemnation from the African Union (AU) and regional backlash. Somalia’s government denounced the move as “unlawful,” insisting Somaliland remains “integral and inseparable.” The AU reaffirmed its position of recognising only Mogadishu’s authority.
Egypt coordinated rejection with allies, while Somaliland’s president hailed Israel’s recognition as “historic.” Nigeria’s stance aligns with AU and ECOWAS principles amid broader Horn of Africa dynamics.
